The UK Practical Driving Test

The practical driving test is the final hurdle between you and a full UK driving licence. It lasts approximately 40 minutes and assesses whether you can drive safely and competently on public roads. Understanding exactly what happens removes uncertainty and allows you to focus on demonstrating your skills.

What Happens During the Test

Eyesight Check

Read a number plate from 20 metres in the test centre car park. Failing this ends the test immediately.

Tell-Me Show-Me

One verbal safety question before driving, one practical demonstration whilst driving. Getting both wrong counts as one minor fault.

Independent Driving

Approximately 20 minutes following a sat-nav or traffic signs. Wrong turns do not count against you unless you make a driving error.

40 Minutes Total

The entire on-road driving portion lasts roughly 40 minutes, including one reversing manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop.

Manoeuvres You May Be Asked to Perform

The examiner will ask you to carry out one reversing manoeuvre during the test. You will not know which one until the examiner gives the instruction. Approximately one in three tests also includes an emergency stop.

Parallel Parking

Park behind a vehicle at the side of the road, reversing into a space roughly two car lengths long. Minor adjustments are acceptable provided you observe properly throughout.

Bay Parking

Either driving forward into a bay and reversing out, or reversing in and driving forward out. Typically performed at the test centre car park.

Pulling Up on the Right

Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse approximately two car lengths and then rejoin traffic. Practise this during lessons as it is uncommon in everyday driving.

Emergency Stop

React promptly to the examiner's signal, bringing the vehicle to a controlled halt as quickly as possible without locking the wheels or losing control.

How Faults Are Marked

Driving Faults (Minors)

Minor errors that do not pose a direct risk. Examples include checking mirrors slightly late or stalling once at a junction. You are allowed up to 15 driving faults and still pass.

Serious Faults

Errors that could potentially be dangerous, such as failing to check mirrors before changing lanes when traffic is nearby. A single serious fault results in a fail.

Dangerous Faults

Actual danger to you, the examiner, another road user or property. Examples include pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. A single dangerous fault results in a fail.

Most Common Failures

The most frequently recorded serious faults involve observation at junctions, use of mirrors and response to traffic lights. Focus your practice on thorough observations.

The 2026 Booking Rule Changes

The DVSA has introduced significant changes to the practical driving test booking system in 2026, designed to reduce test cancellation abuse and third-party booking scams that have plagued the system in recent years.

Self-booking requirement: From March 2026, learners must now book their own practical test rather than having an instructor or third party book on their behalf. This aims to eliminate third-party services bulk-buying test slots and reselling them at inflated prices.

Two-change limit: Candidates are now limited to two changes (date, time or centre) per booking. Previously, unlimited changes allowed speculators to hold multiple slots and swap them freely.

Centre restrictions: The new system restricts candidates from booking at test centres that are an unreasonable distance from their home address, preventing displacement of local candidates.

Book your practical test as soon as you and your instructor agree you are test-ready. Use only the official GOV.UK booking service. Waiting times vary by region, but most areas currently offer appointments within six to ten weeks. The test costs GBP 62 on weekdays or GBP 75 on evenings and weekends.
