As testing got underway yesterday in Bahrain for the 2014 Pirelli tyre, commentators remarked that the 2013 cars seemed to be running slower lap times on all of the new tyres being tested, indicating a perhaps more cautious approach from the Italian tyre manufacturer for the 2014 season. With winter tyre testing beginning in the heat of Bahrain, Pirelli appears to have reversed the decision of last season to install steel belts which landed the Italian manufacturer in such hot water at the beginning of last season and has instead reverted to the more traditional Kevlar belts. Whilst it is not clear what the exact impact of the 2014 tyres will be on the cars due to the secrecy of the testing, it appears almost a certainity that the lap times will increase on 2013 records. With the formula 1 teams keeping a tight lid on their results from the testing and Pirelli even more tightlipped, it appears we will have to wait a while longer to see the full results of the updated Pirelli P Zero 2014 tyre. Pirelli had a rocky start to last season and will be keen to not repeat that problems that plagued races including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July and is perhaps hoping that this winter testing with Mclaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari which is set to finish on Friday will help to avoid this. Gearing up to supply over 40,000 tyres to the Formula 1 teams this season, it seems we will have to wait just a little longer to find out the exact goals of the new Pirelli F1 tyre.
