Throughout the Tyres.Online website and across the web in general there are plenty of mentions about ensuring you have the correct pressure in your tyres. There is two main reasons for this:
  1. The most obvious reason is for safety. It's a fact that underinflated tyres, no matter how premium or budget they are, will not perform in the same way as those with the correct pressure. The reason for this is that 95% of the tyres weight is supported by the air in the tyre, meaning it's critical that tyres are inflated correctly. Tyres will naturally loses up to 2PSI of air each month through normal use. However, as temperatures change the pressure inside your tyre will fluctuate faster and so it's important that going in to the winter months you check to ensure your tyres are inflated correctly
  2. The second reason for ensuring the correct pressures in your tyres is for cost. Under inflated tyres will cost you money. On average across the U.K only 28% of tyres are correctly inflated, with Goodyear estimating that through simply maintaining the correct tyre pressure you will be able to save up to 5% of your fuel.
It's not only underinflated tyres that could end up costing you money. When heading in to the warmer months it's important to release some of the pressure that has built up through expansion due to the temperature. An overinflated tyre can end up costing you more than you'd bargained for through uneven tyre wear which will significantly reduce the lifespan of your tyre. Michelin recently visited a South Yorkshire NHS trust and examined their fleet of vehicles, estimating that the trust could save as much as £22,000 a year if it ensured that all of the tyres on it's vehicles had the correct pressure in them.  The results however did show that the fleet was perhaps better managed than most users vehicles with over 49% correctly inflated, meaning each of the 1000 cars that had incorrect tyre pressures would be costing the trust £22 extra a year. Checking your tyre pressures is easy, and especially poignant at this time of year with temperatures plummeting and belts tightening as most of us prepare for the festive season. So next time you're at the petrol station, take a moment to ensure that all of your tyres are correctly inflated, and you might just end up saving some money this Christmas!
