Convictions for Defective tyres are on the up for UK motorists.  The number of penalties have been rising for the past 4 years in England and Wales with the number of convictions hitting an all time high in 2010 with 10,475 convictions. These figures show there is a large level of neglect when it comes to tyres in the UK.  As tyre tread runs lower and lower on the tyre so does the efficiency of the tyre.  The UK legal tyre tread limit is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre but it is suggested that you change your tyres at 3mm tread.  When travelling at 60mph and stopping to a halt the braking distance on tyres with 3mm of tread is 91metres, with 1.6mm of tread the stopping distance is 135mm.  That extra 1.4mm really does make a lot of difference.
