At Tyres.Online, one of the questions we're often asked is what is a premium tyre brand? The tyre industry as a whole struggles with defining what is a premium brand with the numbers of available tyres growing significantly over the past decade clouding the previously clear cut lines between premium, mid range, economy and budget tyres. So how do you class a tyre as premium? Some people would look to price alone and assume that an expensive tyre must equal a premium brand. Others have floated the idea that only those scoring we'll in the EU tyre labeling tests should receive the accolade as being a premium brand, although the problem with this is that tyre brands such as Michelin will have a wide range of tyres that perform very differently in the tests. Historically the big 6 brands of Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear and Pirelli have all been considered the benchmark for a premium tyre brand. Why? Well largely due to the fact that they were used as original equipment, so when you bought your new car you found the tyres were usually from one of the big six, reinforcing the image from advertising that these are premium brands. In fact they probably still are, with heavy investment in research and design as we'll as years of history in racing and motorsport the big 6 have a wealth of experience that allows them to produce some of the best. There have however been a new influx of tyre brands in the last decade that are nipping on the heels of the big 6 to join them in the class as a "Premium tyre brand". These brands including the likes of Yokohama, Firestone and Toyo are increasingly landing contracts for original equipment on both European and Pan Asian manufacturers. At Tyres.Online you can compare a huge range of brands in all classes from Premium and mid-range to Economy and Budget.
