With predictions of a very bad winter heading our way, we thought it would be apt to write about the best winter tyres available in the UK today.  Weather experts are saying that the winter is going to be the worst since the big freeze in 1947.  With this many or all the roads in the UK are going to become heavily affected and in most cases shut down.  The UK has the canny ability to grind to a halt as soon as the first snowflake hits solid ground. Not only will winter tyres increase your grip in the bad conditions they also increase your safety.  In some countries in Europe it is compulsory to drive on winter tyres during the winter months. With 3 times more grip than the summer tyre when driving on ice and snow as we'll as added wet weather grip the winter tyres really come into their own when the going gets tough. As the weather drops below 7 degrees the rubber on the summer tyre stiffens, loosing grip and control on the road.  The winter tyre on the other hand gains more grip and control and will respond better than ever.  With temperatures dropping below 7 degrees for most of the winter months the question is why aren't we all driving on winter tyres? The obvious issue and probably the first to arise is what to do with your summer tyres during the winter months and vice versa.  Many people don't have space to store these tyres as they are actually quite bulky and take up considerable space.  Well the answer to this is, Tyre hotels.  In various locations or fitting centres throughout the UK you can pay a nominal monthly fee to store your summer tyres and then swap them for your winter tyres as temperatures begin to rise. Recently a test was carried out to see which where the best performing tyres available in the UK market.  The tyre test compromised of the following areas: Traction in the snow / Traction in the wet / Traction in the dry / Handling in the snow / Handling in the wet / Handling in the dry / Braking in the snow / Braking in the wet / Braking in the dry / Aquaplaning in a straight line / Aquaplaning round a corner / Aquaplaning in slush (wet snow) / Noise emissions & Price. As you can imagine there were some varied results, your probably thinking the best was indeed the most expensive, we'll in actual fact you will be happy to know that it was actually an economy winter tyre that came out top trumps. In 1st place came the reasonably priced Nokian WR D3.  In second came the Contintental Winter Contact TS 850 and in 3rd came the Goodyear UltraGrip 8 Performance. There were a total of 8 tyres tested in this experiment and all had areas where they excelled but overall taking into everything the Nokian beat the big boys to the top.
