About Matador

Matador represents one of Slovakia's most distinguished industrial heritage stories, with origins stretching back to 1905 in Bratislava before establishing its modern identity in Púchov, Slovakia, in 1947. Originally founded as "Gumárne 1. mája" (Rubber Works of 1st of May) as a national enterprise, the company initially operated under the Barum trademark, reflecting the centralised industrial planning characteristic of post-war Czechoslovakia. This early period established the foundation for what would become one of Central Europe's most successful tyre manufacturing enterprises.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Matador systematically expanded its capabilities and market position, becoming Czechoslovakia's monopoly producer of air tubes by 1962 and the country's primary manufacturer of rubber conveyor belts from 1955. This diversified approach to rubber manufacturing provided valuable expertise and financial stability, whilst the company gradually developed its automotive tyre capabilities. The transition to truck radial tyres in the 1970s marked a significant technological advancement and positioned Matador for future growth in the expanding European automotive market.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1987 with the establishment of Matador's own research and development centre, now known as "Vipo," demonstrating the company's commitment to innovation and technological advancement. The political and economic transformation of the early 1990s brought significant changes, as Matador transitioned from state ownership to a joint-stock company between 1991-1994. This period also marked the adoption of the Matador brand name in 1993, replacing the previous Barum trademark and establishing the distinctive identity that continues today.

The relationship with Continental AG began in September 1998 with the establishment of "Continental Matador" as a joint venture for truck tyre production. This partnership gradually deepened, with Continental acquiring 51% ownership in 2007, increasing to 66% in 2008, and ultimately achieving 100% ownership in 2009. Under Continental's stewardship, Matador has benefited from access to cutting-edge German automotive technology whilst maintaining its Slovak manufacturing heritage and European production competencies.

Today, Matador operates as a fully integrated subsidiary of the prestigious Continental Group, exporting over 87% of its production to 80 countries worldwide. With more than 110 years of combined experience in the tyre industry, the company maintains state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Púchov that serve both Continental's global requirements and Matador's distinctive brand positioning. The company's success exemplifies how traditional Central European manufacturing expertise can thrive under international ownership whilst preserving local industrial heritage and contributing significantly to Slovakia's position as a major automotive manufacturing hub within the European Union.
